So here's the (next) plan

I like the look of Eisenhower in 10mm

I have a large supply of barely touched WWII 10 mm forces; in Eisenhower with Battalion unit sizes, small dioramas become a things.  By using largish bases (say 60mm square) I can make small dioramas.  Since I have no winter forces at the moment, this is a good excuse to prep some.  I will also order a large winter game map with 6" squares per the recommendation in the rules.  No crammed up forces on my board.

I also like the look of 3mm figures

Now that they are switching to 3D printing, I am optimistic that the problems of separating metal sprues will go away. If so, 40mm square bases on my Kallistra hex grid should work for hex Eisenhower, or I can continue developing my own rules.

But all my old armies?

I am going to try switching back to Blitzkrieg Commander; a fun, fast game and my existing figures will work fine.

Unit Concepts

Battalions

Infantry:
  • 2-4 infantry stands, "strength points"
    • Not directly companies
  • 0-3 "capability" stands such as MG, AT Rifle, etc
  • Big question: Support "strength points"
Armour etc:
  • 2-4 vehicle models for main type
  • Capability models?

Thinking about Actions

Principle 1:

  • The objective of the game, in general, is to achieve a breakthrough and exploit.

 Unit Hierarchy

  • The basic unit is the battalion.  Stands assigned to the battalion do not represent companies, but represent capabilities of the battalion.
  • Some "battalions" might represent special units smaller than a battalion.
  • Battalions are combined into Formations which might be regiments, brigades, or even divisions.
  • Activations are applied to Formations

Activation

  • An activated Formation may:
    • Move
      • Concentrate and move
      • Move and deploy
      • Move and Move
    • Assault
  • Movement can consume logistics points
  • Artillery is part of a formation, but might do different things as part of an activation.

Representation

Most grand tactical rules seem to omit:
  • Artillery
  • Higher headquarters
  • Logistics nodes and supply dumps
All of these seem important at least as the prize for a breakthrough.

Random Ideas

Ideas about operational WWII

Scale

  • Distance 10cm = 1km (or so), or 1:100,000
  • Time very flexible, to allow for periods of slow and fact movements.  Since rates of advance can vary from 25km/day against minimal opposition down to zero, a fixed time tick leads to rushing past important details and staying too long with insignificant actions.
  • Hex based, a new thing to try.  Kallista hexes are 10cm

Inspirations

  • MMP Battalion Combat Series
  • PanzerKorps v2
  • Spearhead

Other Principles

  • Battalion level units
  • Higher level formations for activation
  • The cards from Maurice give proceeding a natural wind-down.
